A hostile environment
The stomach combines strong acid with proteases. Most peptides do not survive it, which is why peptide research so often concerns parenteral routes. Sequences that do survive are unusual and attract attention for that reason alone.
Gut-derived signalling peptides
The gut is a substantial endocrine organ. GLP-1 and GIP are released from it in response to nutrients, and much metabolic research traces back to that observation.
Research in tissue models
Work on gastrointestinal peptides commonly uses tissue-injury and mucosal models where healing is the measured variable, frequently examining angiogenic and nitric-oxide-related signalling. The literature is largely in animal models, and describing it is not a statement about any other context.
