Laboratory handling practices

Research compounds are handled on the assumption that their biological activity is not fully characterised — because it is not.

The working assumption

A research compound has been characterised chemically, not toxicologically. Absence of reported harm reflects absence of study, not absence of hazard, and handling should assume the latter.

General practice

  • Appropriate protective equipment, including gloves and eye protection
  • Handling powders in a way that avoids generating airborne material, since lyophilized solids are light and disperse easily
  • Labelling every derived container with compound, concentration, solvent and date
  • Not eating, drinking or storing food where compounds are handled
  • Keeping records of what was made, when, and from which batch

Why labelling derived containers matters

An unlabelled tube of clear liquid is unidentifiable and has to be discarded. Labelling at the moment of preparation is the only reliable point, because reconstructing it later is guesswork.

Disposal

Research materials and contaminated consumables are disposed of according to local requirements, not into general waste.
